How long have you been training?

13 years

When did you get your black belt?

14th December 2003.

Who was your first instructor?

Stuart Kitchener.

Why did you start training?

I really liked watching power rangers when I was a child.

Who inspires you?

Billy Brennan because of all he has achieved. As well as being a first class instructor he is also a former kumite champion and now a world kata and kumite referee.

What drives you to keep training?

The interest in the knowledge of karate, fitness, and the support of my family and friends.

What other sports do you do/have you done?

I used to do rugby, snooker, and football. I currently enjoy swimming and running as well as being a 2nd Dan in ju jitsu.

Who do you know that is still training from when you started?

The only people i can think of are a few of the instructors, and my dad, Andy Cornish.

What advice would you give to someone who wishes to start karate now?

Be patient. Karate has its highs and lows however ultimately it has fulfilling prospects, such as discipline, fitness, and self defence.

What age did you start karate?

At the young age of 6 years old.

What are your future goals & hopes?

I’m currently joining the navy as a submariner and wish to take part in their karate team if possible.

How often do you train?

I train 3 times a week but also instruct 3 times a week.

What challenges have you overcome?

My fitness and breathing has improved since I started.

What is your favourite kick?

Jump side kick.

What is your favourite kata?

Currently my favourite kata is unsu.

What is your favourite fighting move or technique?

Front kick, round kick combination.

What is your top tip for others?

Concentrate and work hard, it will pay off in the future.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

“Train hard, grade easy” – Billy Brennan.
