8 Arena Karate athletes have been selected to represent Team GB at the WTKA World Championships in Italy.
Ben's martial arts journey spans more than a decade across several disciplines. His introduction to martial arts came during his primary school years when he trained in Judo for two years, achieving the rank of 8th Mon (Orange Belt). Over the years he has continued to expand his knowledge and experience, training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Kyujutsu, where he currently holds the rank of Green Belt.
Although martial arts originally appealed to him as a way of learning self-defence, Ben quickly discovered that training offered much more than practical skills. It became a way to challenge himself physically and mentally while continually striving for self-improvement.
Ben began his karate journey with Arena Karate in January 2022, a year after his stepson Oliver first stepped onto the mats. What started as supporting Oliver soon became a passion in its own right, and today both train and compete together as members of the Arena Competition Squad.
Now a 3rd Kyu (Brown Belt), Ben has progressed rapidly through the grades and has become a valued member of the squad. A dedicated kumite competitor, he particularly enjoys testing and applying techniques under pressure. For him, competition is an opportunity to put the lessons learned in training into practice and continue developing as a martial artist.
Ben's hard work and commitment have recently been recognised with selection to represent Team GB at both the WTKA European Championships and the WTKA World Championships. Earning the opportunity to compete on the international stage is a proud milestone in his martial arts journey and reflects the dedication he has shown since taking up karate.
Alongside competing, Ben also serves as an assistant coach at competitions, helping support Arena athletes throughout the day. Whether encouraging competitors before they step onto the tatami, offering advice between rounds or celebrating successes, he enjoys helping others perform at their best.
One of the things Ben values most about Arena Karate is the camaraderie within the club. While he is committed to achieving his own goals, he takes just as much enjoyment from seeing fellow students overcome obstacles, grow in confidence and achieve success of their own.
Away from the dojo, Ben has an impressive list of achievements. He is a contributor to a published book and was the first child in the UK below Year 11 to sit GCSE examinations at the age of 12, helping to set a precedent for gifted children to access qualifications at an earlier age.
Looking ahead, Ben's focus is on achieving his next karate grade, continuing to improve his fighting physique and making the most of the opportunity to represent Team GB on the European and World stage.
Balancing training alongside a demanding work schedule is not always easy, but Ben remains committed to his martial arts journey, fitting training around his professional and family commitments whenever possible.
For anyone considering entering their first competition, Ben offers some reassuring advice:
"If you are nervous, that's a good thing. It means you are growing beyond the dojo environment and it means you care."
When asked who has been his biggest supporter throughout his martial arts journey, Ben's answer was immediate:
"My stepson, Oliver."
Having watched Oliver begin his own martial arts journey before joining him in the dojo himself, Ben continues to draw inspiration from the dedication, determination and enthusiasm he brings to training and competition.
What does karate mean to Ben?
"Balance, improved physical health, improved mental health and community."
