8 Arena Karate athletes have been selected to represent Team GB at the WTKA World Championships in Italy.
Elijah has been training with Arena Karate for three years and has become a valued member of both the club and the Arena Competition Squad. Originally inspired to start karate to learn how to protect himself and make new friends, he has developed a strong passion for training and enjoys the challenge of continually improving his skills.
During his time with Arena Karate, Elijah has progressed to 10th Kyu (Yellow-Orange Belt) and has gained valuable experience through both training and competition. He approaches karate with enthusiasm and enjoys every opportunity to learn something new.
Kumite is Elijah's favourite discipline and he particularly enjoys the challenge of applying the techniques he learns in class against an opponent. Competition gives him the chance to test his skills, build confidence and see the progress he has made through training.
One of the things Elijah enjoys most about competing is the variety of events available and the opportunity to showcase the techniques he has worked hard to develop. Whether competing in Kata, Kumite or Slam Man events, he enjoys stepping onto the competition area and giving his best effort.
While competition is an important part of Elijah's karate journey, the friendships he has made along the way are equally important. Being part of Arena Karate has given him the opportunity to train alongside supportive teammates, build lasting friendships and be part of a welcoming club environment. When asked what he enjoys most about being part of Arena Karate, his answer summed it up perfectly:
"The friends I have made."
Looking ahead, Elijah hopes to continue improving his kumite skills, learn more kata and add to his growing medal collection as he gains more experience in competition.
Away from the dojo, Elijah's favourite food is steak, which he proudly describes as his number one choice when it comes to mealtimes.
For anyone thinking about entering their first competition, Elijah has some simple but effective advice:
"Remember your training and have fun."
Throughout his martial arts journey, Elijah has been supported by many people, but two individuals stand out in particular:
"My Dad and Renshi Stef Barnes."
Karate has become a true family activity for the Dixon family. Elijah's dad, Mal, not only trains alongside him but also competes as a member of the Arena Competition Squad. His mum, Bryony, and sister, Lilola, also train, meaning Elijah is surrounded by family members who share his passion for martial arts. Having that support both in and out of the dojo has helped him grow in confidence and continue developing his skills.
Alongside his family, Renshi Stef Barnes has played an important role in Elijah's development, providing guidance, encouragement and support throughout his training and competition journey. Together, they have helped him grow in confidence and continue progressing as both a martial artist and a competitor.
What does karate mean to Elijah?
"It's super fun and I love improving my skills."
