8 Arena Karate athletes have been selected to represent Team GB at the WTKA World Championships in Italy.
Mal's karate journey began with a simple goal: spending quality time with his son.
What started as a way to support his child's martial arts journey quickly became something much bigger. Before long, his wife and daughter had joined too, turning karate into a family activity that they could all enjoy together.
For Mal, karate has provided much more than a new hobby. Having always enjoyed fitness through running and gym training, he discovered that karate offered a completely different challenge. Through training, he has developed a greater focus on mobility, longevity and functional fitness, helping him work towards long-term health and wellbeing goals.
One of the most remarkable parts of Mal's journey is the personal transformation he has achieved. During the height of the pandemic, he weighed 24 stone. Today, he has reduced that to 15 stone and continues to use karate as an important tool in maintaining his health, fitness and overall wellbeing.
Although relatively new to the sport, Mal has embraced competition and particularly enjoys kumite. For him, competition provides an opportunity to take everything learned in training and apply it under pressure.
Looking ahead, Mal's goals are simple: continue improving, keep challenging himself and—if possible—finally land that elusive head kick in competition.
When asked what he enjoys most about Arena Karate, his answer reflected something many members of the club would recognise:
"The camaraderie in the dojo is a joy to be a part of. Everyone has each other's backs and strives to help each other achieve their goals."
Karate has also strengthened the bonds within his own family. With the whole family now training together and both Mal and his son competing, training sessions and competition days have become something everyone looks forward to.
When asked how he balances training, work and family commitments, his answer was simple:
"The best way to balance it is to get the whole family joining in!"
While many people have supported him throughout his martial arts journey, there is one person who stands out above all others.
When asked who his biggest supporter has been, Mal's answer was immediate:
"My son."
He still remembers asking if his son would like him to join karate and seeing his face light up with excitement. Today, his son's encouragement remains one of his greatest motivations, and Mal hopes to show him that goals can be achieved through hard work, discipline and the support of those around you.
For anyone considering entering their first competition, Mal offers some advice that reflects both his martial arts journey and his outlook on life:
"It doesn't matter if you win or lose. The lessons you learn, not only about your technique but about yourself, will last a lifetime."
What does karate mean to Mal?
"A place to challenge myself, build strong family bonds, stay healthy and enjoy the support of an incredible community."
