8 Arena Karate athletes have been selected to represent Team GB at the WTKA World Championships in Italy.
Oliver has been training with Arena Karate for over five years and has become one of the club's most dedicated and experienced junior competitors. Originally inspired to try karate after seeing his friend Jack train, Oliver quickly discovered a passion for martial arts that has continued to grow year after year.
Now a 3rd Kyu (Brown Belt), Oliver regularly represents Arena Karate at competitions across the country. Having competed for the past four years, he has gained valuable experience through local, regional and national events, continually challenging himself to improve both on and off the tatami.
Oliver first stepped onto the competition area as a 12th Kyu Red Belt and has never looked back. Through hard work, determination and a willingness to learn, he has steadily progressed through the grades while building an impressive competition record.
Kumite is Oliver's favourite discipline and he enjoys the challenge of testing his skills against different opponents. Competition gives him the opportunity to put his training into practice, improve his speed and reactions, and continue developing as a martial artist.
While kumite is where Oliver feels most at home, he also has a real passion for kata. He has a knack for learning new kata quickly and is often one of the first to remember a new sequence. Once he has learnt it, he enjoys the challenge of refining the details and working towards performing it to the best of his ability.
One of the things Oliver enjoys most about training and competing is learning from those around him. He values the opportunity to train with classmates who have different strengths and skills, using their experience to help him overcome challenges and continue improving his own performance.
Oliver's enthusiasm for martial arts extends beyond his regular karate training. Alongside karate, he has trained in Kyujutsu for the past year and currently holds the rank of Orange Belt. Through Arena Karate, he has also attended a number of martial arts seminars and training events, giving him the opportunity to learn from a variety of experienced instructors and explore different disciplines. These experiences have introduced him to skills from Ju-Jitsu, Kickboxing, Bokken, Kendo and other martial arts, helping him broaden his knowledge and understanding of the wider martial arts community.
His willingness to embrace new learning opportunities reflects his genuine passion for martial arts and his desire to continually improve both as a competitor and as a martial artist.
One of Oliver's proudest achievements to date came at the English Karate Federation Kyu Grade Championships, a national competition that attracts some of the country's best developing karate athletes. Competing against strong opposition, Oliver delivered an outstanding performance, returning home with both a Gold Medal and a Silver Medal.
Building on those successes, Oliver has since achieved another major milestone in his martial arts journey by being selected to represent Team GB at both the WTKA European Championships and the WTKA World Championships. Competing on the international stage is something he has dreamed of, and the opportunity to wear the Team GB badge is a reward for the dedication, perseverance and hard work he has shown throughout his karate journey.
Away from competition, Oliver is committed to his continued development as a martial artist. As a 3rd Kyu (Brown Belt), he is now working towards one of his biggest personal goals – achieving his Black Belt. He understands that success comes through hard work, consistency and a willingness to learn, and he brings those qualities to every training session.
Looking ahead, Oliver hopes to continue improving his karate skills, become faster in kumite, win more fights and gain experience at bigger competitions. Representing Team GB at both the WTKA European Championships and the WTKA World Championships is a dream come true, and he hopes these experiences will help him continue developing as a competitor while working towards his long-term ambition of one day representing both England and Great Britain at the highest level.
Away from the dojo, Oliver also enjoys gymnastics and is incredibly flexible. In fact, he can perform the full splits and bend in half, something that often impresses both teammates and instructors alike.
Oliver is fortunate to have a large support network around him. When asked who has supported him most throughout his martial arts journey, he said:
"My mum, step-dad, Nanny, Auntie Hannah and Uncle Richard, as well as all my friends from class and my instructor, Stef."
He also wanted to give a special mention to his three-year-old cousin, Lily, who recently watched him compete and was excited to see him in action. Their encouragement and support have helped him grow in confidence and continue pursuing his goals both in training and competition.
For anyone thinking about entering their first competition, Oliver has some reassuring advice:
"Just try your best. It's your first competition, so no one's expecting you to win. If you do win, that's amazing, but there is no pressure."
What does karate mean to Oliver?
"Karate helps me feel calmer when I'm anxious and teaches me how to defend myself."
